The Winchester field hockey team has been driven all season to return to the Division 1 Final Four and rewrite last year’s outcome. On Tuesday night, that determination paid off as the fifth-seeded Red and Black (17-3) triumphed 2-1 over top-seeded Bishop Feehan in a challenging second-round match.
Despite conceding 13 penalty corners, the Shamrocks’ goalie Emma Mitchell delivered an outstanding performance with 26 saves, keeping the game tight throughout. Winchester’s persistence, however, ultimately made the difference.
The Shamrocks (9-10-1) battled hard to the final whistle, showcasing grit and discipline against a high-caliber opponent.
“It was a great game,” said Red and Black head coach Michelle White. “One of the things was, it was a very physical game. I think sometimes that can be detrimental to our attitudes. ... One of the differences for us – they just stayed in the game and did the things that had to do. We had a ton of opportunities, and we continued to push.”
“We practice all of this every day, and we’ve really been going at it all season,” added senior defender Madison Von Mering.
Author’s summary: Winchester’s teamwork and composure secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Bishop Feehan, advancing them closer to the Division 1 Final Four.
