Winchester Upsets No. 5 New Bedford in MIAA Tournament First Round

Winchester came into New Bedford and defeated the No. 5 seeded Whalers 2-1 in the first round of the MIAA Division 1 Boys Soccer tournament on Thursday evening. The Red and Black (11-3-4) entered the match following a 1-0 victory over No. 37 Andover in the Preliminary Round on Monday.

New Bedford (14-5-0) was seeking its first tournament win since the 2019 South Sectional tournament. Despite being a lower seed, Winchester Head Coach Vinnie Musto said his team never saw themselves as underdogs.

“We didn’t go into this match thinking that if we won, it was going to be a big upset,” Musto said. “We were confident from minute one, we thought we were the better team, and we came out as quickly as we could.”

The Red and Black scored two goals close together in the first half. In the 18th minute, Ean Errico took a shot that deflected off a Whaler defender and landed at junior captain Cole Queenan, who scored.

A few minutes later, Seif Ebeid bypassed two defenders and assisted Tom Duval for the second goal.

“We wanted to be the first to score, and we were aggressive enough to get two quick ones,” Musto said. “Then we locked it down.”

The Whalers were unable to overcome the early deficit and Winchester secured the upset victory.

Winchester’s confident and aggressive play overcame a higher-seeded New Bedford team, marking a strong start in the tournament.
