Removing notifications for @mentions in commit messages - GitHub Changelog

Removing Notifications for @Mentions in Commit Messages

To reduce unwanted noise and help you concentrate on what truly matters, GitHub is stopping notifications triggered by mentions in commit messages.

Previously, mentioning a user or team in a commit message (for example, "fixes bug for @username") generated a notification, similar to mentions in issues or pull requests.

Update Effective December 8th, 2025

Starting December 8th, users and teams will no longer get notifications when mentioned in commit messages. Mentions in issues, pull requests, and discussions will still trigger notifications as before.

“Mentions in issues, pull requests, and discussions will continue to trigger notifications.”

Community Feedback

Editor’s note (November 7, 2025): Updated terminology for the type of notifications.

Author's summary: GitHub is eliminating notifications from @mentions in commit messages to minimize distractions, while keeping notifications active for issues, pull requests, and discussions.
