Amid the Premier League's controversial lack of Boxing Day matches, the scheduling of an EFL Cup quarter-final between Crystal Palace and Arsenal has sparked further debate. Oliver Glasner expressed strong frustration over Palace potentially playing three games within five days before Christmas, calling the organizers "irresponsible."
After Crystal Palace's 3-0 victory over Liverpool in the EFL Cup fourth round, the timing of their quarter-final clash against Arsenal became contentious. While the other three quarter-finals are set for December 16, Palace are scheduled to face Manchester City in the Premier League on December 14 and Kuopion Palloseura in the Conference League on December 18.
Both clubs are actively negotiating the quarter-final date, with Arsenal preferring to keep it on December 16 and Palace aiming to postpone it to the following week.
At a pre-match press conference before Palace's game against Brentford at Selhurst Park, Glasner openly criticized FIFA, UEFA, the Premier League, and the EFL for their handling of schedules.
“Honestly, I can't believe that it will be fixed in that way. I think it would be irresponsible for the players,” Glasner said when questioned about the demanding schedule. “Everybody has a responsibility to the players. We have to look after their welfare. That's our main responsibility – and not just at the club. When I heard it for the first time yesterday, I couldn't believe they were considering this.”
Glasner condemns fixture congestion that risks player welfare, emphasizing shared responsibility among football authorities to ensure reasonable scheduling.
