Closure of the 2nd Congo Basin CSOs Conference: the Kinshasa Declaration establishes a regional front for climate justice and forest protection - Greenpeace Africa

Closure of the 2nd Congo Basin CSOs Conference

Kinshasa, 4 November 2025 – The second edition of the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) Conference of the Congo Basin ended on 31 October in Kinshasa with unity and resolve, marked by the formal adoption of the Kinshasa Declaration. This pivotal document sets a course for fair, inclusive, and transparent climate governance across the Congo Basin.

United Regional Effort for Climate Justice

The conference gathered more than 30 delegates representing civil society groups, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, traditional leaders, experts, and public bodies from five Congo Basin nations: the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Gabon, and the Central African Republic. Together, they reinforced cooperation across the region and voiced a shared appeal ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil.

From Dialogue to Action

Guided by the theme “From Dialogue to Action: Building a United Regional Front for the Climate, Forests, and Peoples of the Congo Basin,” the meeting revitalized the ambitions initiated at the 2024 Yaoundé Conference.

Participants warned of ongoing deforestation, persistent inequality in access to climate finance, continued marginalization of Indigenous Peoples, and the unchecked growth of extractive industries threatening ecosystems and livelihoods.

Author’s Summary

The Kinshasa Declaration unites the Congo Basin region behind a common vision for equitable climate governance, forest preservation, and social justice across five nations.
