INTERVIEW: Asia’s football chief says winter scheduling for 2034 World Cup will be ideal

Asia’s Football Chief Supports Winter Schedule for 2034 World Cup

With the World Cup returning to Asia just 12 years after Qatar, Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa believes the continent could again become a favored location for football’s greatest event. Saudi Arabia, after an unopposed bid, will host the 2034 FIFA World Cup.

Similar to Qatar 2022, there is a strong likelihood that the Saudi edition will be scheduled during the cooler winter months rather than the traditional summer period, a move supported by Sheikh Salman, president of the Asian Football Confederation and senior vice president of FIFA.

“I don’t see it any other way, but there is still a long way to 2034 and I think it depends on FIFA and the confederations to decide,” Sheikh Salman told Dawn during his visit to Pakistan.
“The time will come for them to decide, but I think I agree why the World Cup should not only be in the summer,” he added.

FIFA confirmed at the end of last year that Saudi Arabia will realize its long-standing goal of hosting the global football tournament, becoming the second country on the Arabian Peninsula to do so after Qatar.
