North Coogee’s modular engineered reef and the coastal restoration project at Melville Beach Road Foreshore were honored in the 2025 WA Coastal Awards for Excellence. These awards are organized by the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage as part of the WA Planning Commission’s Coastal Zone Management Program and CoastWA.
The awards ceremony took place during the 2025 WA Coastal Forum: Communities, Coasts & Change, held at the Coogee Beach Surf Life Saving Club on October 27. The event highlights exceptional efforts in planning, managing, and protecting Western Australia’s varied and expansive coastline.
The engineered fringing reef at O’Connor Beach received the coastal management award for its success in reducing wave erosion impacts while greatly enhancing biodiversity.
Mayor Logan Howlett remarked, “It demonstrates leadership in addressing climate-driven shoreline loss while creating a unique recreational and ecological asset for Perth.”
This achievement resulted from the city prioritizing innovation rather than retreat, following erosion risks identified in its coastal adaptation plan. The project is a collaboration between the city, MMA Offshore (now Cyan Renewables), and the UWA Oceans Institute. Together, they developed a two-stage reef made up of 270 modular units designed to mimic natural reef structures.
The project highlights how innovation and partnerships can effectively address challenges posed by climate change on coastal environments.
Author’s summary: Perth’s innovative coastal projects demonstrate leadership in climate resilience, merging ecological benefits with community recreation through cutting-edge reef engineering.
