Charli XCX entered the studio with clear ideas to compose the score for the upcoming Wuthering Heights film after being approached by Emerald Fennell. The 33-year-old pop star shared insights into her creative process on Instagram on November 6.
The Grammy-winning artist revealed that she was captivated by the “world [Fennell] was creating” and welcomed the chance to explore something “entirely new, entirely opposite” from her previous album, Brat. She described her impressions of Wuthering Heights as follows:
“When I think of Wuthering Heights, I think of many things. I think of the Moors, I think of the mud and the cold. I think of determination and grit.”
Charli also cited Todd Haynes’ documentary about The Velvet Underground as a source of inspiration, emphasizing that every track needed to feel “both elegant and brutal.” She highlighted her excitement about collaborating with John Cale, a member of The Velvet Underground:
“I feel so lucky to have been able to work with John on this song.”
Her new song, titled House, serves as the soundtrack's title track and is set for release on Monday, months in advance of the movie’s February debut.
Charli XCX brings a fresh, emotionally intense sound to the Wuthering Heights adaptation, blending elegance and raw power inspired by the moody landscape and iconic music influences.
