The Atlantic Coast Conference has long faced criticism for placing the Florida State–Clemson football game early in the season, often in September or early October. This scheduling typically led to an early defeat for one of the league’s stronger programs.
This year marks a rare change. For only the fourth time since 2010, the ACC scheduled the game for November 8, featuring two teams that were both expected to contend — Clemson, a preseason playoff pick, and Florida State, anticipated to rebound in the win column.
However, both teams have underperformed. Neither Clemson nor Florida State ranks among the ACC’s top programs this season. Over the past 14 years, at least one of the two had appeared in the ACC Championship Game 13 times. Clemson entered as the defending champion, while Florida State captured the title in 2023. Yet neither will make it to Charlotte this year, as both hover near the lower end of the conference standings.
Despite their struggles, the upcoming matchup could still deliver excitement. Fans may see plenty of offense rather than defensive mastery.
“While it won’t be a marquee game, FSU–Clemson could be a fun one to watch.”
Recent scores suggest a potential shootout: Clemson’s narrow 46–45 loss to Duke and Florida State’s overtime defeat at Virginia (46–38) followed by a 34–31 home loss to Pittsburgh.
Although neither team is in playoff contention, a rivalry win could restore a measure of pride and momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.
The long-standing FSU–Clemson rivalry has lost national prominence this year, but with both teams desperate for redemption, the late-season clash still promises energy and entertainment.
