Serving Prisoners Charged with Murder of Child Killer

Three inmates have been charged with the murder of Kyle Bevan, who was discovered dead in his cell at HMP Wakefield on Wednesday, 5 November.

Mark Fellows, 45, Lee Newell, 56, and David Taylor, 63, appeared separately via video link at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on Friday. Each was remanded into custody and will reappear at Leeds Crown Court on Monday. All defendants were dressed in grey tracksuits.

Fellows and Newell spoke briefly to confirm their names, dates of birth, and understanding of the proceedings. When questioned about the charges, Taylor responded:

“Absolutely not. I'm innocent.”

Each session lasted slightly over a minute. District Judge Charlotte Holland informed the defendants they would remain in custody pending a pre-trial preparation hearing scheduled for Monday.

Background on Kyle Bevan

Bevan was sentenced in April 2023 to a minimum of 28 years for murdering his partner’s two-year-old daughter, Lola James, in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. The child suffered fatal head injuries during a six-hour assault in 2020.
