Remembrance Day Every Day for Trumpeter Playing Last Post

David Ellerby has performed the Last Post at the Woodstock Cenotaph on Remembrance Day for more than fifteen years. He sees it as a small personal tribute to those who served their country.

“It’s the least I can do for my part, for what they did,” he said, referring to the men and women from his community who risked their lives for Canada.

For Ellerby, who began playing the trumpet in Grade 4, remembrance is not confined to one day a year.

“For me, Remembrance Day is every day, we can’t let it slide by,” he said. “There are fewer and fewer veterans every year, it’s part of our history.”

His wife’s uncle fought in the Battle of Ortona, one of the bloodiest battles involving Canadian troops during the Second World War as the Allies advanced through Italy.
