Marco Penge will join Rory McIlroy in the same group for the first time at this week's Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship at Yas Links. The 27-year-old Englishman, who has had an outstanding season on the DP World Tour, is excited about the opportunity.
"I actually did ask him in Ireland a couple of months ago to get a practice round at some point but haven't crossed paths and timing’s not worked out. For me, he's the best player in my generation of kind of watching golf. He's been so successful, and I think a lot of guys in my age group really look up to him not just as a golfer but as a person."
Penge admires McIlroy’s game and character, often comparing aspects of his own play to him. He looks forward to testing his strengths against McIlroy’s and identifying areas for improvement.
Last season, Penge narrowly kept his DP World Tour card by finishing 110th in the Race to Dubai standings. Shortly after, he faced a three-month ban due to betting on golf, which interrupted his progress.
This year, Penge made a striking comeback, winning three events: the Hainan Classic, the Danish Golf Championship, and the Spanish Open. These victories have propelled him to 29th in the world rankings.
"I am excited to see what I think my strengths are compared to him on Thursday and see where I can improve."
Marco Penge’s breakthrough season has earned him respect in golf, and sharing a group with Rory McIlroy represents both an honor and a learning opportunity.
Author’s note: Marco Penge demonstrates remarkable growth by challenging top peers and using the experience to elevate his game further.
