How did Jacob Elordi perform as The Creature? Fans of Guillermo del Toro, including myself, were thrilled when news broke that the Oscar-winning director was finally making his own adaptation of Frankenstein—a project he had envisioned for nearly two decades.
Del Toro’s films have always shown a compassionate approach to monsters, evident in works like Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water. Despite my excitement for this film, a casting change during production initially tempered my enthusiasm.
Originally, Andrew Garfield was set to star, but just before filming began in early 2024, he withdrew citing “scheduling conflicts.” Jacob Elordi was then announced as his replacement. This shift sparked mixed feelings for me.
I don’t doubt Elordi’s talent. He delivered a haunting performance in Euphoria and impressed as Elvis Presley in Priscilla. However, Andrew Garfield remains one of my all-time favorite actors, which made the recast difficult to accept initially.
“I found him to be especially haunting in Euphoria, and was impressed by his performance as Elvis Presley in Priscilla.”
Now that I have seen the film, I am ready to share my thoughts on how Elordi carries the role within del Toro’s unique horror vision.
This release officially places Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein among the highly anticipated horror films of the year.
“Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein officially became part of upcoming horror movies when it was picked up by Netflix in 2023.”
The casting switch from Andrew Garfield to Jacob Elordi initially caused doubts, but Elordi’s nuanced performance in Frankenstein offers a fresh and compelling portrayal under del Toro’s visionary direction.
