How a YouTube Employee Landed a Role in the Bruce Springsteen Biopic

Mike Chiavaro, a YouTube Music Operations Manager, secretly portrayed Garry Tallent in the Bruce Springsteen biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere. His unexpected casting journey reveals a unique crossover between his career and passion for music.

From YouTube to Film Set

Late last year, Mike arrived at work sporting “gigantic sideburns,” a surprising change for someone who usually keeps a clean-shaven look. When coworkers asked, he jokingly claimed he had lost a bet. In reality, Mike had just landed a major acting role.

The Casting Call

Shortly before growing the sideburns, Mike was contacted by a casting director seeking someone to play E Street Band bassist Garry Tallent. As a lifelong bassist with experience performing alongside artists like Richard Marx and Derek Trucks, Mike was highly recommended for the part. The filming schedule required him to shoot over four weeks spread across three months.

Preparing for the Role

Besides the sideburns, Mike signed a nondisclosure agreement but was able to inform his manager. Growing up near New Jersey, Springsteen's hometown, and performing in a wedding band, Mike was deeply familiar with hits like “Dancing in the Dark.”

“I’d been listening to and playing Bruce’s music my whole life,” Mike shared. “This was like a dream.”
