Bruce Springsteen, known as The Boss, surprised the audience by performing at the New York Public Library’s Rose Main Reading Room during the Library Lions Gala in New York City on Monday, November 4. This event marked a rare occasion where Springsteen played in a library setting, something he noted humorously.
“I have never played a (blanking) library!” Springsteen said, highlighting the unusual venue compared to his past performances at fireman’s fairs, weddings, bar mitzvahs, bowling alleys, pizza parlors, hockey rinks, and football stadiums, as reported by Vogue.
All were inducted into the New York Public Library’s Hall of Fame during the event.
Before his performance of the classic “Thunder Road,” attendees watched a video reflecting on libraries’ impact on the inductees. Springsteen shared a personal story about his small hometown’s library.
“My town only had about 10,000 people, but there in the center of it was the library, and it was this place where the rest of the world was waiting,” Springsteen said in the video. “It gave me this greater sense of possibility… it was a sanctuary.”
The Freehold Public Library, mentioned by Springsteen, is located at 28½ East Main Street.
While performing at the library, Springsteen subtly hinted at his evolving musical path, suggesting new artistic directions might be on the horizon.
