The NHS will provide over two million free flu vaccine appointments starting next week, available to a broad range of people. This annual initiative occurs during autumn and early winter when flu cases usually peak.
Although flu is not life-threatening for most and symptoms often resolve within weeks, some groups face a heightened risk of severe illness and complications. To protect these vulnerable individuals, the flu jab is offered at no cost to specific groups.
The NHS UK announced on X (formerly Twitter):
"Flu is spreading earlier than usual. There are 2.4 million flu vaccine available appointments next week. Find out if you can get a free NHS flu vaccine and how to book."
The vaccination protects the body from serious influenza infections by preparing the immune system to recognize and combat the virus without prior exposure. It does this by introducing a small amount of inactive flu virus, prompting the immune response.
The NHS is expanding free flu vaccine access to reduce serious flu complications, especially in high-risk groups, with 2.4 million appointments becoming available soon.
