Typhoon Kalmaegi swept across Vietnam on Friday, claiming five more lives after causing severe destruction in the Philippines, where the death toll reached 188.
The typhoon brought record rainfall and flooding to the central Philippines this week, destroying cars, trucks, and shipping containers before moving on to Vietnam.
Kalmaegi made landfall late Thursday in Vietnam's Gia Lai province.
«По словам Нгуен Ван Тама, 42-летнего рыбака из провинции Зя Лай: The roof of my house was just blown away. We were all safe, (but) the typhoon was really terrible, so many trees fallen.»His boat remained intact despite the storm's fury.
Authorities continue damage assessments; the environment ministry reported five deaths and 57 houses collapsed in Gia Lai and neighboring Dak Lak. Nearly 3,000 houses suffered roof damage, and 11 boats or ships sank.
Vo Thi Danh, 43, witnessed from higher ground as the typhoon demolished Nhon Hai fishing village in Gia Lai, destroying boats and washing away her family's small seaside house.
«Волны были такими высокими, что полностью поглотили дом, который полностью разрушился, ничего не осталось.»
Typhoon Kalmaegi caused catastrophic damage in the Philippines and Vietnam, with nearly 200 lives lost and widespread destruction of homes and vessels.
This storm highlights the devastating power of natural disasters in vulnerable regions, emphasizing urgent needs for enhanced disaster preparedness and response.
