AZ Alkmaar suffered a decisive 3-1 loss to English Premier League club Crystal Palace on Thursday evening in the UEFA Conference League. The Dutch side struggled to contain their opponents, with fortune preventing an even heavier defeat at Selhurst Park.
Palace, who earned their place in the competition after winning the English FA Cup, created their first major opportunity in the 11th minute. A long ball was headed back into the penalty area by Chris Richards and controlled by Ismaila Sarr, whose volley struck the post.
Moments later, Palace were awarded a penalty after Yeremy Pino played a sharp pass through to Sarr, who was brought down by Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro.
Jean-Philippe Mateta, usually reliable from the spot, saw his attempt saved by Owusu-Oduro.
Despite the missed penalty, Palace maintained relentless pressure. Owusu-Oduro produced a brilliant save to deny a close-range header from Sarr, and seconds later Will Hughes struck a looping volley that clipped the crossbar.
The constant attacks eventually paid off when a long cross into the area was nodded down by Sarr to center-back Maxine Lacroix, who fired a powerful low volley into the corner for the opening goal.
AZ managed their first shot on target in stoppage time before halftime. Sven Mijnans unleashed a decent strike from distance, but Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson pushed it away for a corner.
Just a minute later, the home side doubled their advantage, leaving AZ facing an uphill battle for the remainder of the match.
Crystal Palace dominated AZ with intense pressure and clinical finishing, sealing a comfortable 3-1 home victory that underlined their superior form and physical presence.
