Florida’s basketball team has the tallest player in college basketball, yet Olivier Rioux started the season on the bench, sparking curiosity among fans. Dressed in a team sweatshirt, he remained on the sidelines during the opener.
Rioux is not playing because he still needs time to adjust to the speed, skill, and physical intensity required at the elite college level. The Gators decided to redshirt him in his freshman season to allow for development and strength training.
Although Rioux celebrated with his teammates during their national championship victory and even cut down a piece of the net, he did not step onto the court that season.
"After redshirting as a true freshman last season, he's expected to get on the court in limited capacity this fall. He's unlikely to play much considering the defending national champions return their entire frontcourt, but he should at least get on the court in garbage time."
According to ESPN, coach Todd Golden considered using Rioux for specific defensive moments, particularly to guard inbound passes—a role where Rioux excelled during the FIBA U19 World Cup in Switzerland, forcing a crucial turnover that led to a three-pointer before halftime.
"Rioux's unusual height landed him in the Guinness World Records a few years ago, and he has become a walking viral video at Florida."
Standing at 7-foot-9, Rioux’s remarkable stature has drawn national attention and made him one of the most recognizable figures in college sports.
Olivier Rioux, the 7-foot-9 Florida center, remains sidelined as he develops his game, with his record height and steady progress still capturing national interest.
