NHS issues flu jab SOS with worst of winter only weeks away

The NHS has issued an urgent appeal for people to get their flu vaccinations, warning that the most severe part of winter is approaching within weeks. England’s chief nurse urged all eligible adults to come forward for protection before the flu season hits its peak.

To meet demand, the health service is preparing 2.4 million vaccination appointments next week — enough to cover the populations of Greater Manchester or Botswana. The NHS stresses the importance of early vaccination this year, as flu cases have emerged more than a month earlier than usual and are currently three times higher than at the same point last year.

“We’re seeing flu circulating significantly earlier this year, and getting vaccinated now will help protect you and reduce pressure on the NHS,” said England’s top nurse.

The UK’s situation follows Australia’s record-breaking flu season, often viewed as an indicator for what could happen in England. According to the latest data, NHS teams have administered over 13 million flu vaccines nationwide since the campaign began, reaching 13,299,775 doses.

Approximately 59.4% of care home residents have already been vaccinated, supported by local initiatives that bring jabs directly into care homes and communities through mobile clinics and pop-up vaccination sites. Additionally, 2.3 million vaccinations have been given to eligible children, including around 400,000 two- and three-year-olds — about one-third of all toddlers who qualify.
