Opposition skills and training spokesman Scott Buchholz urged observers not to confuse Sussan Ley’s “feminine politeness” with weakness. The Queensland MP also criticized Ley’s predecessor, Peter Dutton, labeling his leadership as “authoritarian.” Buchholz joined in criticizing Victorian Liberal senator Sarah Henderson for comments made earlier.
“I see Sussan doing incredible things, given the circumstances that she’s been having to deal with. I think what the party’s struggling with is the style of leadership that Sussan brings,” Buchholz said after a party event in Canberra.
“Don’t mistake her feminine politeness for weakness. We have come from a previous leadership style of authoritarian [under Dutton] to now a consultative, and some people mistake that, but there are just different styles of leadership.”
Buchholz said he had not initially heard about Henderson’s remarks on Ley’s leadership but called them “career-limiting comments” once informed. He added that the party is still grieving after the election loss in May and needs time to recover.
