Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is set to inject an additional $1.5 billion annually into the state’s underfunded transit systems. However, this increase will take effect in the latter half of 2026, when new taxes are projected to generate nearly $320 million for transit by the end of the year.
Officials announced at a Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) meeting that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ride-share program, previously at risk of being cut, will be revived using funds from the recently passed historic transit funding bill in Springfield.
In a recent decision, the RTA board approved revised budget figures for 2026. This includes a $56 million allocation towards Pace’s Taxi Access Program (TAP) and Ride-share Access Program (RAP).
“JB Pritzker’s signature is set to pump an additional $1.5 billion a year into the state’s money-starved transit system.”
“There is enough cash expected next year to shore up the system’s workforce and expand an ADA ride-share program.”
Author’s summary: Starting in late 2026, Illinois will boost transit funds with $320 million, reviving essential ADA ride-sharing while laying groundwork for major improvements in 2027.
