At 7-foot-9, Olivier Rioux of the University of Florida became the tallest player in college basketball history during his highly anticipated debut against North Florida. The 19-year-old Canadian’s first appearance came as the Gators secured a dominant 104-64 victory on Thursday night at the O’Connell Center.
With UF leading 102-61 and just over two minutes left in the game, a crowd of about 10,065 erupted with chants of “Oli, Oli, Oli,” celebrating the world’s tallest teenager and a fan favorite, despite not playing since joining in summer 2024. Coach Todd Golden welcomed Rioux onto the court amid the excitement.
“It felt great. The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful,” Rioux said.
While Rioux didn’t score or collect a rebound, his presence was historic, surpassing Kenny George’s record as the tallest college player at 7-foot-7. George played for UNC Asheville from 2006 to 2008.
“It’s another day, I guess,” Rioux commented, reflecting his status as a campus-wide curiosity who often receives requests for photos, autographs, and conversations.
Rioux’s teammates, especially his close friend Micah Handlogten, were thrilled to see him take the court.
“So much fun. When he was checking into the game, I kind of stopped him and I was like, ‘Play with confidence,’” Handlogten said. “Even at 7-foot-1 I feel small next to him.”
Rioux’s debut marks the start of what many expect to be a remarkable collegiate career for the tallest player in college basketball history.
