Several People at Joint Base Andrews Fall Ill After Suspicious Package with White Powder

A suspicious package was delivered to a U.S. military base in Maryland, leading to several people falling ill and being hospitalized, according to CNN reports released on Thursday.

The incident occurred at Joint Base Andrews, located just outside Washington, D.C. After one person opened the package containing an unidentified white powder, authorities quickly evacuated the affected building and nearby structures as a safety measure.

“As a precaution, the building and connecting building were evacuated, and a cordon was established around the area,” said a statement from Joint Base Andrews.

Several individuals were transported to the Malcolm Grow Medical Center on the base for evaluation. The exact condition of those affected has not been disclosed.

Joint Base Andrews is best known as the home base of Air Force One, the aircraft that transports the President of the United States. Two sources familiar with the situation told CNN that the substance found in the package was an unknown white powder.

Base first responders determined there was no immediate threat and turned the scene over to the Office of Special Investigations for further analysis. An initial HAZMAT field test did not detect any hazardous materials, but the investigation is continuing.
