Lloyds Pharmacy's flu warning as NHS says flu season 'has come early'

Lloyds Pharmacy Issues Flu Warning as NHS Reports Early Season

Flu season has arrived earlier than usual this year, with the NHS confirming a surge in cases across the UK. The winter wave hit about a month sooner than expected, with infection rates now three times higher than at the same time last year.

Rising Flu Cases and Impact on Population

Data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) shows flu cases climbed from 6.1% to 8.2% in the past week, predominantly due to a rise among school-aged children. Last year, cases were at 2.9% during this period.

The early surge raises concerns about flu spreading further in the population and potentially causing a prolonged flu season.

Flu Vaccination Efforts Intensify

The NHS is stepping up its autumn and winter vaccination campaign to combat the spread of the virus, having already administered 12.2 million flu vaccines this season.

Dr Bhavini Shah, LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor GP, highlighted the importance of vaccination: "Flu season typically begins in the autumn and peaks between December and February, so getting vaccinated early gives your body time to build immunity before the virus starts circulating widely."

"It takes around two weeks for the vaccine to provide full protection."

Dr Shah warned of the risks involved if eligible individuals skip their flu jab.

Author's summary: An unusually early and intense flu season in the UK urges quicker vaccination efforts as health officials warn of a potentially extended outbreak.
