Thailand warmly received over 100 contestants on Sunday as the 74th Miss Universe competition opened in Bangkok. Among them was Cambodia’s representative, whose appearance has drawn attention amid ongoing diplomatic strains between the two nations.
Held under the theme “The Grand Universe: The Power of Love, The Power of Thailand,” this marks the fourth time Thailand has hosted the global event. The program will continue through November 21, featuring activities in Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya that highlight the nation’s tourism, culture, and hospitality.
The Cambodian contestant, Thai Neary Socheata—also known as Fiyata—arrived in Bangkok independently after Cambodia’s national license holder, ELEVENTO9 Company, had announced the country's withdrawal a day earlier. The organization cited “unresolved situations between Cambodia and Thailand.”
Fiyata’s decision to compete on her own initiative triggered discussions across both countries’ social media platforms. Despite the official withdrawal notice, she received a warm welcome from Cambodian supporters upon arrival at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
“I’ve arrived safely in Thailand. Thank you for the warm welcome, kindness, and support from everyone. Your love truly means so much to me.”
Thailand’s hosting of Miss Universe 2025 celebrates cultural unity, while Cambodia’s independent contestant adds a personal dimension to ongoing regional tensions.
