UN Women Condemns Attacks on Women and Girls in El Fasher, Sudan

UN Women has strongly condemned the continuous attacks on women, girls, and civilians in and around El Fasher, Sudan. The organization expressed deep alarm over the situation.

Siege and Starvation

“For more than 500 days, women and girls have endured siege, bombardment, and deliberate starvation,” UN Women reported. Nearly 300,000 women and girls—about half of the 575,000 people trapped—are surviving on animal feed and leaves, facing acute hunger and insecurity.

Escalation of Violence

The Rapid Support Forces' (RSF) takeover of El Fasher has escalated the crisis from siege to mass atrocities. These include killings, rape, gang rape, sexual slavery, forced marriage, and abductions of women and girls.

Casualties and Attacks on Medical Facilities

According to local medical networks, including the Sudan Doctors Union, more than 2,000 civilians have been killed in recent days, including women and girls. On October 30, nearly 500 patients and their companions died during attacks on the Saudi Maternity Hospital, a place many women had sought for safety and medical care.

Attacks on Health Workers

There are credible reports of assaults targeting health workers in the region, further aggravating the humanitarian crisis.
