Gary Lineker and Micah Richards have shared their views on Florian Wirtz, who has struggled to make an impact since joining Liverpool in the summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old German playmaker, signed from Bayer Leverkusen for a British record £116 million, has yet to score or assist in the Premier League. He was named on the bench during Liverpool's 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday.
Lineker and Richards commend manager Arne Slot for removing Wirtz from intense pressure, believing this approach will help him succeed at Anfield.
“At the moment he is not up to speed for the Premier League, but he spent £100m on him, but 100% it was the right decision that he made," Richards told the Rest is Football podcast.
Richards acknowledged the significant investment Liverpool made and the losses the team faced with departures. He emphasized the need to gradually introduce Wirtz into the lineup, possibly on the left wing instead of replacing Cody Gakpo, warning that the Premier League is “too fast and furious” for sudden changes.
"Liverpool now go back to what they did last season. Slowly but surely move Wirtz into the side, whether that is going to be on the left for (Cody) Gakpo, but the Premier League is too fast and furious."
The presence of top-caliber players like Trent Alexander-Arnold is missed, highlighting the challenge Liverpool faces while integrating new signings.
Despite a slow start, experts believe Florian Wirtz has the potential to excel at Liverpool if managed patiently and given time to adapt to the Premier League's demanding pace.
