Nigeria: Health Ministry expresses concern over kidnapping of consultant

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of Nigeria has voiced deep concern over the abduction of Dr. Tochukwu Mbanugo, a consultant neurosurgeon at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, Anambra State, Southeastern Nigeria. The kidnapping was carried out by unidentified armed men on Thursday, October 30, 2025.

Incident details

According to reports from the hospital, Dr. Mbanugo was attacked near Omatha Junction in Uruagu, Nnewi, while returning home after a demanding day in the operating theatre.

Earlier that day, he had successfully conducted several complex neurosurgical procedures, including the removal of a challenging brain tumour, which saved the lives of patients in critical condition.

"His abduction occurred at the very point where he should have been safest: returning home from serving humanity."

Ministry response

Iziaq Adekunle Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, confirmed that contact was later established by the abductors through Dr. Mbanugo’s phone with some of his colleagues. The ministry expressed solidarity with the victim’s family and strongly condemned the act, calling for swift action to ensure his safe release.

Summary

The Nigerian Health Ministry condemns the kidnapping of Dr. Tochukwu Mbanugo in Anambra State, urging authorities to act promptly for his safe return.
