Thanks to a mention on CBS, the mother of Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein received a boost for her Louisville bakery. Meanwhile, the Ducks’ offense, ranked 10th nationally, continues to delight fans.
Will Stein sat with me inside Oregon’s press room one Wednesday afternoon. We joined a Zoom with his Aunt Blakey, waiting for his mom, Debbie, to join. Although the interview was planned to focus on cake, the conversation shifted to chili when Blakey mentioned hosting the high school football team for dinner in Louisville.
“Blakey is the best cook,” Stein said. “The greatest chili maker of all.”
Stein noted that Louisville chili often includes noodles, a detail backed by my own experience tasting Blakey and Debbie’s cooking, which I would gladly enjoy again. Following a shoutout by Brad Nessler on CBS, their culinary talents gained even wider recognition.
Blakey and Debbie own SissyCakes bakery, which began as a hobby in 2003. It grew significantly during the pandemic and now operates from a facility in St. Matthews, just east of Louisville. Their specialty is a variety of bundt-style cakes including pumpkin, cinnamon pecan coffee, caramel apple, and chocolate chip.
“The orange juice cake turned SissyCakes into a full-fledged brick-and-mortar bakery; it’s Debbie’s creation,” Stein explained.
Growing up, Debbie was known as the “birthday cake mom,” always making white-on-white cakes.
