Melbourne Cup Day brought cold weather and showers to Melbourne as a cold front swept across Victoria, causing snow in the high country of both Victoria and New South Wales. Outside celebrations experienced chilly conditions on this public holiday, the first Tuesday in November.
Melbourne itself struggled to reach the forecasted high of 17°C by the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), feeling as much as five degrees cooler throughout much of the day due to persistent gusty westerly winds.
"The ski runs at Mt Hotham, Victoria, looked like winter again," as shown by the snow cam image dated on Melbourne Cup Day.
Those westerly winds brought intermittent showers, with a chance of thunderstorms in the unstable cold air mass. Showers in Melbourne were most likely to occur during mid-afternoon.
Further south in Tasmania, Hobart recorded its wettest day since July, receiving 25mm of rain by 9am on Tuesday.
