In a video message to the European Jewish Association (EJA) delegation visiting Auschwitz, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever emphasized the need for vigilance against rising antisemitism.
“We must remain vigilant.”
He highlighted a recent surge in antisemitic incidents, warning that “hatred is again being followed by violence and terror as seen in Manchester, Rouen, Berlin and beyond.”
Addressing participants at a two-day symposium in Krakow, Poland, part of the EJA's annual delegation visit and remembrance service at Auschwitz, De Wever declared:
“As Prime Minister I will always take full responsibility to safeguard the security and wellbeing of our Jewish community, in Antwerp, in Belgium and in Europe.”
De Wever, who is also former Mayor of Antwerp, noted that he had to cancel his planned visit due to urgent budget negotiations within his coalition government.
He stressed the importance of memory in confronting antisemitism:
“The infinite pain of the Holocaust continues to live on in our collective memory. These darkest pages of Europe’s history are engraved in our conscience.”
De Wever urged ongoing efforts:
“We must continue to remember, to study, to witness and to educate.”
Highlighting Antwerp’s connection to Jewish history, he said:
“In Belgium, and especially in Antwerp where the Jewish community and its history are deeply woven into the fabric of the city, we continue to strengthen our policy of remembrance and education.”
However, he added that remembrance alone is not sufficient to address the challenges faced today.
Bart De Wever reaffirms his commitment to protecting the Jewish community while emphasizing continuous remembrance and education to combat rising antisemitism.
