Calgary Police Arrest 20 in Downtown Enforcement Blitz

Dozens of Calgary police officers, transit peace officers, and social agency workers converged on the city's downtown core on Wednesday as part of a new enforcement effort.

Operation Order Launch

Calgary Police Chief Katie McLellan, speaking in front of a large group of uniformed officers and partner organizations, stated clearly that "enough is enough." This marked her first major public initiative since assuming office earlier this year.

She introduced Operation Order, a comprehensive enforcement blitz targeting crime and social disorder in Calgary’s downtown areas.

Areas and Objectives

The operation focused on districts such as East Village, Stephen Avenue, and Century Gardens. The team’s goals included law enforcement, ticket issuance, making arrests, and linking vulnerable people to support services.

Results by Mid-Afternoon

Notable Incident

One of the first tickets was issued to Grant Robinson for discarding a cigarette butt, resulting in a $120 fine.

“This is gonna stop me from probably another month because I have to pay it,” Robinson said. “I won’t be able to save money because I have to give the government money.”

Police Patrol Details

Reporters accompanied officers patrolling back alleys and transit platforms as part of the enforcement effort.

Summary: Calgary’s new downtown enforcement campaign under Chief McLellan swiftly targeted crime and social issues, leading to numerous arrests and fines while connecting vulnerable individuals to support services.
