I'm a Zionist Jew from New York; I had to vote Mamdani

Choosing the right candidate for mayor was a difficult decision I pondered for weeks. As a lifelong Zionist and New Yorker, I asked myself, "Who could best lead our city through these challenging times?"

A conversation with a respected family friend, an Israeli who has lived in New York for 25 years, helped clarify my choice. He shared his views on Andrew Cuomo, whom I already found arrogant, too old, and a womanizer:

“I'd vote for Bibi, who you know I despise, before I'd vote for Cuomo.”

He explained that many Israelis, who claimed Mamdani was an antisemite and would harm Jews in America, lacked the full context to understand this mayoral race. Similarly, Israelis criticize Americans for their overwhelming support of the Palestinian cause without grasping the complexities involved.

He noted that many Americans supporting Palestinians did not comprehend the meaning behind the phrase “From the river to the Sea.” They had never visited Israel and failed to understand how close the borders are and the reality of constant attacks.

He further explained how Hamas has intentionally embedded fighters and weapons in hospitals, schools, and mosques for decades, disregarding the safety of their own civilians. Additionally, the Netanyahu government underestimated the possibility of an attack as severe as that of October 7.

Author's Summary

This personal reflection highlights the complexity of political choices shaped by deep-rooted identity, geopolitical realities, and the often misunderstood context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
