Following the municipal election and upcoming budget considerations, Calgary police showcased enforcement efforts on Wednesday by conducting a sweep of the downtown area to combat increasing crime.
"Violence in the core (the Beltline, Chinatown, Downtown East Village, Downtown West End, Eau Claire and the Downtown Commercial Core) is at a six-year high, according to city statistics."
Calgary Police Chief Katie McLellan emphasized that street robberies and assaults contribute primarily to the increase in violent crimes, often targeting shelter employees and law enforcement officers. Disorderly behavior, including disturbances, unwanted guests, and drug issues, is also at a six-year peak.
According to McLellan, this is not just about statistics. This is also about how people feel when they walk through our streets, ride transit or visit public spaces.
Calgary's police increase enforcement efforts downtown to address a six-year high in violence and disorder, focusing on both crime reduction and community reassurance amidst rising public concern.
