Veteran pacer Mohammad Shami’s hopes of returning to international cricket faced another obstacle when he was left out of the 15-man Indian squad for the upcoming Test series against South Africa. India is set to host two Tests against the Proteas from November 14 to 26, and the squad was announced on Wednesday, November 5.
Keeper-batter Rishabh Pant made a comeback after recovering from a foot injury. However, Shami, who has taken 15 wickets in three matches during the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, did not make the cut. The 35-year-old grabbed seven wickets for Bengal against Uttarakhand and eight against Gujarat, both at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
Shami last played for India in the Champions Trophy final held in the UAE in March this year. His previous T20I appearance came a month earlier, while his last Test outing was in the World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023.
Earlier, Shami and India’s lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah were compared in Tests and T20Is. This analysis focuses on their ODI figures after both had featured in 89 matches each.
“Since Bumrah has played 89 ODIs so far, we compare his stats with those of Shami after the latter had also played 89 one-day matches.”
Despite strong domestic form, Shami’s exclusion highlights stiff competition, while Bumrah’s consistent ODI performance underscores his dominance as India’s premier fast bowler.
