Labour MP Shabana Mahmood has introduced a scheme for a new refugee pathway based on Canada’s model.
It would allow firms, higher‑education institutions and local organisations to sponsor refugees, providing them with housing and employment support.
The objective is to hasten settlement and reduce pressure on the existing system.
Mahmood says the route could welcome thousands of new arrivals, similar to the Ukrainian scheme used last year.
Critics warn the plan may burden public services.
The government has yet to set a timetable.
